A Collaboration of Jazz and Painting at White Plains Public Library

White Plains Public Library presents “The Artists’ Loft,” an interdisciplinary series of live events led by musician Art Bennett. On June 13 and 27, visual artist Lana Yu will join Bennett for his two-hour sessions. In the spirit of jazz lofts of the 1970s, these sessions rely on two artistic disciplines that interact in a creative interplay during parallel workshops. For instance, in a previous session, hip-hop artist Lord Judah helped people to write lyrics while Bennett and his fellow musicians played music. Then, the musicians backed the participants as they took turns at the microphone. During Yu’s sessions in June, the artist will educate people on painting techniques and composition methods for the first hour. In the second hour, Yu will lead people as they paint in conversation with the music that is played by Bennett and other musicians. The collaborative nature of “The Artists’ Loft” spurs performance, improvisation and creative partnership. This program, which is supported by an ArtsWestchester Arts Alive grant, takes place in the Library’s newly-renovated café space and community room. For more info, visit whiteplainslibrary.org.
